Gay Vela, Istmo de Tehuantepec Tour

For Gays and Gay Aficionados. This tour is an unusual look into the matriarchal society of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in particular, the Muxes of Juchitán de las Flores. This group of men, called Muxes, from a rather young age, decide they want to live their lives as women and are encouraged to do so. They age to be prominent women figures in the society, with jobs in politics, education, and esthetics, and are accepted by many walks of life.

Velas are big dances or balls that are held every year in the month of May by the people of Juchitan. The “Intrepids Seeking Danger” is a group of Muxes that have been giving their own Vela in the month of November for over 20 years. The Vela consists of a Catholic mass to start off in the morning, followed by a big breakfast at the annual hostess house, then the big ball (Vela) Saturday night in cocktail dress. Sunday is the Lavado de Olla, or potwash party, when all the Muxes wear traditional regional dress and pass the mayordomia over to the next year´s hostess.

In this tour, we visit many of my friends in The Isthmus of Tehuantepec. We have cooking demonstrations and classes, visit craft villages, have the opportunity to know and learn from the Muxes of Juchitán about their lives, and to experience an incredible fiesta. I will rent trajes or the regional costumes for all participants.

The last day is spent cooking under a thatched roof palapa on a tranquil, pristine beach before we return to Bahías de Huatulco, where this tour begins and ends.

This Tour starts and ends in Huatulco. This is a 4 day-5 night tour in November.

Price of the Gay Vela, Istmo de Tehuantepec Tour $ 1,500.00 USD per person.

To hold your spot in the course a deposit of $250 US is required. Any single supplement charge should also be included with the deposit. Approximately 6 weeks before the beginning of the course, half of the total for the course is due. You should get an email reminder when payment is due. Final payment is due at the beginning of the course in US dollars or pesos. You can also choose to send full payment in advance of the course.
We accept Pesos and US Dollars, cash only. At this moment we are unable to accept credit cards. Thank you!

Cancelation and Refund:
If Seasons of My Heart cancels the course, all fees will be refunded. There is no charge to transfer any fees paid to another course. We try to allow as much time as possible for student registration before canceling a course. Please check with us to see how the registration is progressing before purchasing non-refundable airline tickets. We also strongly encourage trip insurance in case of unforeseen events.
Cancelations by student. Deposits: 60 days or more prior to the start of the course: A refund of the amount paid less a $10 processing fee will be given,. Cancellation by student 30 to 60 days prior to the course: A refund less twenty-five percent of the total price paid (including single supplement and deposit) will be given. Cancellation by student anytime between 29 days through the first day of the course: no refund will be given unless the space is sold to another participant. If the space is filled, a refund less twenty-five percent of the total fees paid will be given. A written notification must be received prior to refund.

We assume no liability or responsibility for any delay, loss, damage, injury or accident with regards to persons or property caused by fault or negligence of any hotel, transportation, or local operator rendering a part of our services. We shall not be responsible for any expense caused by loss or damage of personal items. It is the participant’s responsibility to be adequately insured. We strongly recommend traveler’s insurance. 5Help! I don’t know what to pack for my course!
A detailed letter with a packing list will be sent, together with the itinerary for the course a few weeks before your departure!
6I would like to arrange a private course with Susana for a group of friends. Can that be arranged?
Absolutely! We do ask that you contact us well in advance with possible dates and interests of the group. Susana has done course for groups of chefs, family groups and friends of varying lengths of time within Oaxaca and also in other areas of Mexico. Private classes can also be arranged.
